This project explores the possibilities of juniper as a material in a design context. Juniper has historically been used in many different applications, but today its use is limited.
Juniper has multiple material qualities that make it stand out from other species of wood. Despite its properties, juniper is currently underutilized and hard to source. This creates an opportunity to bring back a forgotten material. For a designer, juniper can be an attractive material. It can be locally sourced and has unique properties. Its rich history can be leveraged for branding and its lack of presence in the market could make for a unique product.
Throughout the process, conversations with professionals have been important to understand the material and the project itself. Researching the historical ways of using juniper has helped uncover its possibilities and explain why it was chosen over other materials. With these insights, working in the workshop with juniper allowed further exploration with the material.
Finding relevant information about juniper and getting hold of the material has been a challenge, which limits its use. The project proposes a service that provides the raw material and the knowledge needed to get started using juniper. The knowledge will be distributed through a zine, digital repository of information and workshops.
