This thesis explores today's fragmented urban development, its underlying structures, and where we can intervene, to democratize urbanism.
Understanding the city is not an easy undertaking. To understand the future city, for the untrained public, is an almost impossible task.
The concept of participation is rooted in the Planning and Building Act, yet it is frequently regarded as a mere formality. To achieve true co-creation, our priority should be to transform all existing information into a format that is easy to comprehend for the public. By enhancing
the knowledge base, the general public gain an increased capacity to engage in discussions about the creation of tomorrow's cities, driving us forward in the pursuit of democratizing urbanism.
Systemic designers are competent in handling complex structures. Something in which urban development, and the creation of cities are, inherently. Nurturing the needs of the many, preserving historic and cultural traits, handling existing and future use and needs, etc.
Urban development is a never ending task, the city in itself, an organic structure. The need for a platform that handles this complexity, will be as valuable for professionals that set out to shape our surroundings, as it will be for shaping the common understanding of our cities.
The solution derives from ideas gathered through giga-mapping urban contexts. These giga-maps present large amounts of information, and serve as important tools for designers working in complex systems. However, these maps do not always effectively communicate
the information to outsiders. The same is to be said for the existing platforms that aim to convey information about urban development to the public.
The conceptualized platform not only makes hard-to-obtain information easily accessible, but it also presents the connections to the physical world, by existing in a digital version of the reality. The platform presents once fragmented development as holistic cities, compelling architects and developers to consider their surroundings from the outset.
